About Therapy

Hands Cynthia TanHave you always been the strong one?

You know what I mean. The one in your friend group that everyone comes to for advice…or the one in your family that always has to have the answer. For as long as you can remember, you’ve been the one responsible for providing solutions and support to the people connected to you.

Deep down you may wonder: “what about me and my needs”? A music artist once wrote the words “who can I run to?”, but I sincerely ask you: when you look around your life, where can you go when you need to take off the mask? Who can you trust with your vulnerability?

Ahhh there it is… that word: vulnerability.

The word that so many people don’t want to touch with a 10-foot pole because somewhere along the way we’ve grown to define it as weakness.

But hear me out: what if I told you that on the other side of your vulnerability is the life you’ve always dreamed of?

Life sometimes has a way blindsiding you, and in this emotional state, your humanity shines through in a way that often can’t be ignored. In an attempt to suppress the discomfort of this humanity, you may turn to work, shopping, people pleasing, or even addictive behaviors to run away from yourself.

But let me assure you that you do not have to live your life as an emotional escape artist any longer. Things can and will get better for you.

Things can and will get better for you.

Enjoy The Journey To Your Destination <3

I truly believe in the transformative power of therapy, especially when you courageously give an unconditional “yes” to the uncomfortable process of truly meeting yourself for the first time. You may ask, “what does the process of meeting myself mean?”.I believe that it means embracing a journey of discomfort, where you pay attention to those nagging feelings instead of tucking them away. Where you allow yourself to “say the quiet parts out loud” that you’ve always known, but never fully admitted to yourself. Where you voice your quietest fears and admit your most deeply suppressed needs.

Meeting yourself is the place where you say YES to your own vulnerability, accepting every thing that comes with it. I’d love for us to work together on your journey of becoming.

No B.S.- Just Real Conversations That Work

My approach is straightforward and grounded in the principles of choices, accountability, and the here-and-now. I’m not here to sugarcoat things or throw buzzwords at you. Instead, I’ll help you take an honest look at where you are, figure out what you truly want, and explore what needs to change to get there. It’s not always easy work, but it’s worth it—and I’ll be with you every step of the way.

Here’s what working with me looks like:

  • We Get to Work Right Away: No drawn-out questionnaires or endless talking in circles. From the start, we’ll identify what you want to change and the steps to get there. My goal is to help you take action—while learning to process those cluttered feelings.
  • We Focus on What You Can Control: Life throws curveballs, and the result can sometimes be extremely overwhelming. Yet, you have the power to decide how you respond. Together, we’ll focus on what’s within your control (and what isn’t) and identify practical tools to help you navigate the process.
  • We Keep It Real: Therapy isn’t about pleasing me or others, or even saying the “right” thing. It’s about showing up as you are and getting honest about what’s working—and what’s not. I’ll challenge you, but always with the respect and care you deserve.

Let’s Get Real

If you’re ready to stop avoiding the hard stuff and start making real changes, I’m here to help. No judgment, no fluff—just honest conversations and actionable steps. Life isn’t about getting it perfect; it’s about getting it real. Let’s get started.

Life’s not about being perfect—it’s about being real. Let’s be honest: if you’re here, something isn’t working, and you’re ready to stop the cycle. Whether it’s a sense of being stuck, relationships that keep going off the rails, or feeling like you’ve lost your way and maybe even feeling hopeless, I’m here to help. Together, we’ll cut through the noise and get to the core of what’s holding you back so you can start building a life that feels authentic and fulfilling.

Why I Do This Work

I came into this field after two decades of leadership in the business world. However, experiencing a few of those curveballs myself, my life and career are now shaped by my commitment to empowering others—whether it’s students in the classroom, individuals in recovery, or clients ready to take ownership of their lives. I’m also a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist, which means I understand the hard, messy, and deeply personal process of change – because I’ve lived it.

As a faculty member at Middle Tennessee State University, I teach with the same principles I bring into therapy: empowerment through engagement, knowledge, critical thought, and action. I believe that every person has the capacity for growth when given the tools, support, and space to figure it out for themselves. My job isn’t to fix you—it’s to help you tap into the strength, experience, and ability you already have.

Outside the Office

When I’m not working…oh, who am I kidding? I’ll be honest; I am usually always working. But I enjoy it, and my work is now about diving into research and advocating for equity and inclusion in education and mental health. I love journaling and writing. I’m a storyteller and jokester at heart, and I love connecting with others through shared experiences. Whether it’s a great meal, a powerful conversation, or literally LOLing – I’m always chasing those moments that make life feel exciting and meaningful.
